Hello Moving Image Stans

Hi, I’m Sam Gurry. I’m a filmmaker, curator, and one of the minds behind 24memespersecond, where we post memes about sand, musings on the animated canon, and things that aren’t technically animation but spiritually absolutely are. (You ever run past a fence real fast?)

I like weird animation. I make weird animation. And I talk about it too hehe on Smear Frame, my podcast and YouTube channel dedicated to independent animation and the people who obsess over it. It’s interviews, video essays, and deep dives into the history, the artists, the disasters, the masterpieces. The love. The deadlines you blew. The part of you that draws until 3am for a joke only five people will get and only two will laugh at.

I’ve taught at NYU, USC, and in the CSU system. I’ve worked across both experimental and industry spaces. And I launched this show because I wanted animators to talk like real people. I’m interested in the space where art history, internet ephemera, and good bad good decisions meet - usually in a smear frame hehe.

Smear Frame is hosted from a folding chair somewhere between a film screening and a festival bar line. It’s got a DIY heart and dirty fingers touching cels, inspired by the 1970s series The Screening Room, and every artist who ever made something beautiful out of scraps, trash, or spite.

Not a genre.

It’s animation, babe.
